Iraq Summons Iranian Ambassador Over Diplomatic Posts Featuring Regional Maps
Baghdad seeks clarification over posts published by Iranian diplomatic missions, stressing that regional disputes must be addressed through dialogue and diplomatic channels
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Iraq’s Foreign Ministry summoned Iranian Ambassador to Baghdad Mohammad Kazem Al-Sadiq for clarification after Iranian diplomatic missions abroad published social media posts featuring maps of the region, prompting concern in Baghdad over content it said was inconsistent with the depth of relations between the two neighboring countries.
The ministry said in a statement that Shorsh Khalid Saeed, deputy foreign minister for multilateral and legal affairs, received Al-Sadiq to seek clarification over posts published by some Iranian diplomatic missions abroad concerning maps of the region, as well as accompanying positions and comments that Baghdad said did not reflect the nature of bilateral ties.
The move comes amid heightened regional sensitivities over territorial issues and political developments across the Middle East, where the depiction of borders and territorial claims can carry significant political implications.
During the meeting, Saeed stressed the importance of maintaining consultations and coordination between Baghdad and Tehran over current regional developments and their potential repercussions for Iraq and other countries in the region.
He also underscored the need to address outstanding regional disputes and issues through diplomatic channels and dialogue, emphasizing that such efforts would contribute to strengthening regional security and stability.
The two sides also discussed ways to further develop bilateral relations, including through reciprocal visits and increased coordination within international organizations and forums.
According to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, the discussions also covered expanding political, economic and security cooperation between the two countries in a manner that serves their shared interests and those of their peoples.
For his part, Al-Sadiq reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to continue cooperation and coordination with Iraq across various fields. He highlighted what he described as the deep historical and social ties between the two countries and stressed the importance of maintaining regular consultations on issues of mutual interest.
The diplomatic exchange underscores the sensitivity surrounding Iraq-Iran relations, as Baghdad seeks to maintain close ties with Tehran while also emphasizing its sovereignty and the importance of resolving regional disputes through dialogue and established diplomatic channels.
