Maliki Warns of Potential Internal Conflict in Iraq

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Iraq is passing through a sensitive phase that requires greater political responsibility and restraint, State of Law Coalition leader Nouri al-Maliki said, warning that armed confrontation could threaten the country’s stability and affect all of its communities.

Speaking during a meeting, Maliki said there were efforts to create political turmoil, while the Coordination Framework continued to support the government in protecting Iraq’s stability and higher national interests.

On the issue of weapons, Maliki stressed the need for state control over arms without resorting to confrontation.

He warned that any confrontation between the state and armed groups would be highly dangerous and could open the door to differing political positions.

Maliki also said any internal confrontation would harm Iraq as a whole. He rejected the view that an expected conflict would be confined to the Shiite community, saying its effects would extend across society and all of Iraq’s components and could create conditions for civil war.

Maliki also stressed the importance of having a clear vision to prevent Iraq from becoming an arena for settling regional and international conflicts.

He called for speeding up the completion of the ministerial cabinet and filling vacant ministries, adding that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi shared the same position on the matter.

At the conclusion of his remarks, the State of Law Coalition leader reiterated that the Coordination Framework stands alongside the government.

He said criticism of the government’s work should not be interpreted as acceptance of a change or its collapse, but rather as an effort to correct the course of its work and overcome challenges through dialogue and understanding.
