Iraq says SDF-Damascus agreement is a key step toward stability in Syria
Baghdad welcomed the integration of Syrian Democratic Forces into Syria’s state institutions, describing the move as an important development for strengthening sovereignty, security and stability.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Iraq’s Foreign Ministry on Friday welcomed the positive outcome of talks between the leadership of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian government, describing the agreement to integrate SDF forces into state institutions as an important step toward strengthening Syria’s sovereignty, security and stability.
In a statement issued on Aug. 28, 2026, the ministry said the agreement would contribute to the unification of armed forces through the decision to integrate SDF forces into Syria’s state institutions.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said the development, along with other measures taken within the same framework, represents an important step toward strengthening stability and protecting Syria’s national sovereignty.
It added that the measures could help expand political participation in governance and contribute to fulfilling the Syrian people’s aspirations for security, peace and stability.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry reiterated Baghdad’s support for all efforts aimed at strengthening Syria’s unity, sovereignty and stability.
It said such efforts should ensure that state institutions serve as an inclusive framework bringing together the country’s diverse components.
The statement comes days after Mazloum Abdi, commander-in-chief of the SDF, formally announced the end of the force’s mission as an independent military structure.
On Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, Abdi announced the formal conclusion of the SDF’s role and its dissolution as an independent military formation.
