Iraq, Iran Stress Dialogue as Key to Easing Regional Tensions
Al-e Sadegh delivered a message from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during his meeting with Hussein.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on Sunday reaffirmed Iraq’s support for dialogue and peaceful solutions during a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Iraq Mohammad-Kazem Al-e Sadegh, as diplomatic efforts continue to ease regional tensions.
According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Al-e Sadegh delivered a message from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during his meeting with Hussein. The two officials discussed the latest developments in negotiations aimed at reducing tensions and advancing diplomatic efforts toward de-escalation.
Hussein emphasized that dialogue and peaceful solutions remain the best approach to resolving regional crises, stressing the need for solutions that protect the security of countries in the region and safeguard the interests of their populations.
The meeting comes as Iraq continues to position itself as a supporter of diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation in the Middle East. Baghdad has repeatedly called for dialogue among regional and international actors, warning that prolonged confrontation could have wider security, political and economic consequences for Iraq and its neighbors.
Iraq and Iran maintain close political, economic and security ties, shaped by their shared border, extensive trade and cultural links, and Iran’s significant political influence in Iraq. Iran also has close relations with several Iraqi political parties and armed groups.
At the same time, Baghdad has sought to balance its relations with Tehran and other regional and international partners, particularly the United States. Iraq has frequently stressed that its territory should not be used to launch attacks against neighboring countries and has called for regional disputes to be resolved through diplomacy.
Tensions between Iran and the United States have also posed challenges for Iraq, which has faced pressure from both sides while seeking to prevent its territory from becoming a battleground. Against this backdrop, Baghdad has increasingly emphasized dialogue and de-escalation as essential to maintaining Iraq's security and protecting regional stability.
