ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent delivered his most comprehensive and unsparing public statement yet on Operation Economic Outcast in an interview aired on Fox News's My View With Lara Trump on Saturday, declaring that the United States will asphyxiate Iran's regime, that the Iranian leadership is panicked because the financial walls are closing in, and that the first two layers of Iran's leadership have been decapitated with a third group now in charge that has seen what happened to its predecessors.
"We're going to asphyxiate Iran's regime," Bessent told Lara Trump. "We are going to systematically target and remove every bad actor linked to Iran and sanctions evasion."
Bessent framed Operation Economic Outcast in explicitly historic terms, comparing it to the Allied D-Day invasion of June 1944. "Today, at President Trump's direction, the United States Treasury has begun Operation Economic Outcast, an unprecedented campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran and its enablers. In the Second World War, D-Day marked the historic beginning of a campaign. Today, in that same spirit, we are launching an economic onslaught against Iran's financial connections around the globe," he said.
He declared the campaign's objective in the starkest terms yet. "Our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains this tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone."
"The Iranian Regime Is Over"
Bessent delivered his most direct assessment yet of the Islamic Republic's condition, describing a leadership in panic as financial pressure intensifies, and said:
"The Iranian regime is over as they know it. Their economy is in free-fall. Their currency has hit a historic low, and inflation is rampant. We are seeing a regime that is panicked because the financial walls are closing in,".
He then made the most significant new disclosure of the interview, addressing the question of leadership succession within Iran's power structure following the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other senior figures in February 2026. "We didn't have regime change, but we changed the regime. The first layer was decapitated, the second layer decapitated. We're on the third group now, and maybe they have seen what happened to the others and they see what President Trump is willing to do," Bessent said. The characterization of Iran as now being on its third tier of leadership, with two previous layers having been removed, is the most explicit American official assessment of the depth of the leadership disruption inflicted on the Islamic Republic since the conflict began.
Bessent added a direct warning to Iran's current leadership about the consequences of any agreement with Washington. On global isolation and secondary sanctions, Bessent delivered the clearest formulation yet of Washington's binary demand to third-party countries and entities. "My message to everyone is to distance themselves from Iran. No one should support this regime. Those who tether themselves to Iran should expect total isolation. Potential targets of these new sanctions include airlines, shipping companies, and digital assets. We will engage in dialogue with anyone assisting Iran, but the choice is clear: you can do business with the United States, or you can do business with Iran. You cannot do both," he said.
The formulation places every country, bank, airline, shipping company, and digital asset exchange in the world on notice that engagement with Iran now constitutes a binary choice with no middle ground, a position that directly targets the strategy that China, Russia, and a range of smaller economies have pursued throughout the conflict of maintaining economic ties with Tehran while managing their relationship with Washington through diplomatic ambiguity.
Ending the Iranian Threat, Not Managing It
Bessent addressed Iran's nuclear ambitions with language that frames the current campaign as a departure from the management posture of previous administrations. "Iran's fanatics devote themselves to 'death to America' and seek nuclear weapons to do just that. They have been at war against America and their neighbors for 47 years. Under President Trump's leadership, America is no longer managing the Iranian threat. We are ending it," he said.
