KRG: Around 80% of Runaki Households Paying Less for Electricity

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Around 80 percent of households enrolled in the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Runaki electricity program continue to pay less for electricity than they did before the initiative, according to figures released by the KRG Ministry of Electricity.

The ministry published billing data for the July cycle, saying most households had a billing cycle of around 33 days. It also said issues involving zero bills for affected customers had been resolved as part of efforts to establish a regular billing system.

According to the ministry, half of Runaki households in the Kurdistan Region paid less than 29,000 Iraqi dinars (approximately $20) and consumed less than 406 kilowatt-hours (kWh) during the July billing cycle.

In Erbil, half of households paid less than 31,000 dinars (approximately $22) and consumed less than 425 kWh, while the figures for Sulaimani were 27,000 dinars (approximately $19) and 387 kWh.

In Duhok, half of households paid less than 29,000 dinars (approximately $20) and consumed less than 408 kWh, while in Halabja the figures stood at 26,000 dinars (approximately $18) and 363 kWh.

The KRG also announced a one-time discount of up to 50 percent on old pre-Runaki electricity debts, encouraging subscribers to settle outstanding debts. The discount is available until September 10.

The ministry said around 90 percent of the Kurdistan Region now has access to 24-hour electricity through Runaki.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani announced the Runaki program in October 2024, while the KRG Council of Ministers unanimously adopted the program and its new progressive electricity tariffs in May 2025.

The KRG has set a target of providing 24-hour electricity to every home and business across the Kurdistan Region by the end of 2026.
