KRG Cabinet Formation ‘Closer Than Ever,’ Spokesperson Says

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) spokesperson Peshawa Hawramani on Wednesday told Kurdistan24 that the formation of a new cabinet is closer than ever, while stressing that reactivating the Kurdistan Region Parliament should be the immediate priority.

Regarding the Region’s share of the 2027 federal budget, Hawramani said the KRG delegation is seeking to have its allocation determined based on population figures from the latest census.

He said there is currently no agreement between Erbil and Baghdad on the issue and that the matter will ultimately be referred to the Iraqi Parliament for a decision.

Hawramani stressed that all political parties in the Kurdistan Region should work collectively to safeguard the rights of the Region’s people. He added that Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani reiterated during Wednesday’s Council of Ministers meeting his commitment to doing everything within his power to protect those rights.

Addressing a recent meeting between Barzani and Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, Hawramani described the talks as positive, saying they were held several days ago and were marked by mutual understanding.

He said reactivating the Kurdistan Region Parliament remains the immediate priority, after which discussions on forming the new cabinet can move forward.

According to Hawramani, talks between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) are progressing positively, making the formation of the new government more imminent than ever.

He added that establishing the new government would strengthen the Kurdistan Region’s ability to address potential challenges.

On the KRG’s request to increase oil exports, Hawramani said discussions with the Iraqi federal government are continuing. He noted that Baghdad understands the Region’s request but has not yet approved it.
