ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Work on the Erbil-Koya dual carriageway project is progressing, with 50 percent of the project completed so far, the Erbil Governorate said on Monday.

According to a statement by Erbil Governorate, work has been completed on half of the project, while construction continues on the remaining sections.

The 37-kilometer road is one of the Kurdistan Region’s major transportation infrastructure projects and is being implemented entirely by local engineers and workers. The project includes several underpasses and overpasses, while significant sections have already been paved with three standard asphalt layers.

Once completed, the project will replace the existing single-carriageway road with a modern dual carriageway, improving road safety and reducing travel time between Erbil and Koya by an estimated 20 to 25 minutes.

The existing road has long been associated with serious traffic accidents due to its narrow lanes and frequent congestion. It has consequently been dubbed the “road of death” by some residents and drivers.

Beyond connecting Erbil with Koya district, the road serves as an important transportation, economic, and tourism corridor linking the Kurdistan Region’s capital with Sulaimani province and the Garmiyan Independent Administration.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is currently executing a sweeping infrastructure campaign frequently dubbed a "road revolution," investing over 5.3 trillion Iraqi dinars (approximately $4 billion) under its Ninth Cabinet to modernize regional highways, reduce urban congestion, and improve public safety. As of October 2026, the KRG has completed over 810 inter-city road and bridge projects spanning thousands of kilometers, with hundreds of strategic expansion initiatives actively underway.
