ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdish youths took to the streets of Hasakah in Western Kurdistan (northeastern Syria) overnight following rising tensions in the city, with several civilians reportedly injured during an intervention by security forces.

According to local sources, the demonstrations came in response to protests by residents of the Ghweiran neighborhood. As demonstrators marched toward the city's courthouse, Internal Security Forces intervened and fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd. Several civilians were injured during the incident.

The tensions followed an incident a day earlier, when the city's administration organized a ceremony to raise the Syrian flag at Peace Square in central Hasakah.

During the ceremony, a group of individuals reportedly attacked and damaged the square's multilingual sign, destroyed nearby surveillance cameras, and assaulted members of the Internal Security Forces.

Video footage and local sources indicated that some of those involved chanted anti-Kurdish slogans, prompting anger among Kurdish residents and triggering protests that further heightened tensions in the city.

Hasakah, a multi-ethnic city in Western Kurdistan, has experienced recurring tensions amid political and security changes in the region. The latest incidents highlight sensitivities surrounding Kurdish identity and public symbols as authorities seek to manage security and administration in the area.
