President Barzani, Finnish Ambassador Discuss Peshmerga Role in Fight Against Terrorism
President Barzani expressed his gratitude to Finland and other coalition countries for their assistance to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and their contributions to the defeat of ISIS.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – On Sunday, President Masoud Barzani received Finnish Ambassador to Iraq Antti Putkonen in Pirmam, Erbil, according to a statement issued by Barzani Headquarters.
During the meeting, Ambassador Putkonen praised the leading and effective role of the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces in the fight against terrorism. He also emphasized Finland’s view that a strong Kurdistan Region would contribute to a stronger Iraq, helping the country achieve stability and recovery.
The two sides exchanged views on recent regional and international developments and tensions, stressing the importance of prioritizing dialogue and peaceful means to resolve disputes.
The meeting also addressed relations and coordination between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi federal government, with discussions focusing on overcoming obstacles and resolving outstanding issues within the framework of the constitution and the principles of partnership, balance, and consensus.
The threat of terrorism and the role of international coalition partners in combating terrorist groups were also discussed. President Barzani expressed his gratitude to Finland and other coalition countries for their assistance to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and their contributions to the defeat of ISIS.
Relations between the Kurdistan Region and Finland include diplomatic engagement and cooperation in security and military training. Finland has contributed to international efforts to defeat ISIS, including support for the Peshmerga forces as part of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS since 2015.
The KRG has also expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Finland in areas including trade, education, agriculture, industry, and technical expertise. Kurdish officials have previously called for a stronger Finnish diplomatic and consular presence in Erbil to facilitate bilateral engagement and investment.
