Trump Announces Russia-Ukraine Energy Ceasefire, Zelensky Says He Was Unaware
“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, without providing further details.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – US President Donald Trump announced Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to halt attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure, an announcement that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said came as news to him, while Moscow had yet to confirm the agreement.
“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, without providing further details.
Zelensky subsequently said Kyiv and its allies were awaiting details of the proposed ceasefire, adding that Ukraine supported any measures aimed at de-escalating the conflict.
“Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well,” Zelensky said on Facebook after speaking with the leaders of Canada and Finland, as well as NATO.
In an interview with Axios, Zelensky said Trump's announcement was “news for me,” indicating that Kyiv had not been informed of the agreement beforehand.
The announcement came two days after Trump announced a temporary easing of US sanctions on Russian diesel, a move that drew criticism from Ukraine and its European allies, who argued that the decision could strengthen Russian President Vladimir Putin's position.
The latest developments come as Trump's war against Iran has contributed to global oil supply disruptions and rising energy prices. Trump has blamed Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries for driving up diesel prices, raising concerns over the economic impact ahead of next month's US elections.
Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure since launching its full-scale invasion in February 2022, disrupting electricity and heating supplies for millions of people, particularly during freezing weather.
Ukraine, meanwhile, has systematically attacked Russian oil refineries, saying the facilities help finance Moscow's war effort.
On Sunday, Ukraine's largest private energy provider, DTEK, announced new power outages in Kyiv amid continued attacks on the country's energy infrastructure.
Trump's announcement also came amid growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over the temporary easing of US sanctions on Russian diesel.
