Iraq Dismantles Two Human Trafficking Networks, Foils Sale of Two Newborns

In Dhi Qar, security forces set an ambush targeting a group allegedly involved in selling a one-day-old infant. Four suspects were arrested in the act after handing over the baby and receiving payment, according to the statement.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) announced on Thursday that it had dismantled two human trafficking networks in Baghdad and Dhi Qar province, foiling attempts to sell two newborn infants and arresting nine suspects.

In a statement, the Service said the operations were conducted based on intelligence and field surveillance, following the acquisition of the necessary judicial authorizations.

In Dhi Qar, security forces set an ambush targeting a group allegedly involved in selling a one-day-old infant. Four suspects were arrested in the act after handing over the baby and receiving payment, according to the statement.

In a separate operation in the capital, Baghdad, security forces arrested five suspects, including licensed midwives, while they were allegedly attempting to sell another one-day-old infant.

The Service said all nine suspects had been referred to the relevant authorities for legal proceedings.

The operations come amid ongoing efforts by Iraqi security agencies to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable individuals, particularly children, from exploitation.
