Pakistan's Army Chief Heads To Tehran
Pakistani army chief General Asim Munir arrives in Tehran Tuesday as Pezeshkian tells Lavrov Iran welcomes any regional initiative on peace, security, and development and is ready to resolve regional issues through dialogue
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir will arrive in Tehran on Tuesday for meetings with Iranian officials, Iran's Tasnim News Agency reported, as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told Russian FM Sergei Lavrov on Monday that American interference and military presence is the cause of differences and tension in the region and that Tehran is ready to resolve regional issues through dialogue.
The Iranian presidency confirmed that Pezeshkian told Lavrov that Tehran welcomes any initiative with regional countries in the fields of peace, security, and development, and that Iran is prepared to resolve regional issues through dialogue rather than military means.
The Significance of Munir's Visit
Pakistan's army chief visiting Tehran the day after Lavrov's visit to the Iranian capital places two of Iran's most important regional partners in Tehran within 24 hours of each other.
Pakistan has been serving as one of the two primary mediators between Tehran and Washington throughout the conflict, alongside Qatar, carrying Iran's conditions and proposals to the American side through indirect channels. General Munir's arrival in Tehran on Tuesday suggests that the mediation track remains active at the military-to-military level in addition to the foreign ministry channel, and that the Pakistani side may be carrying a formal American response or updated position on the seven-day Hormuz proposal that has been under review since Araghchi received Washington's response in late September.
Pakistan and Iran share a long border, a complex history, and overlapping security concerns including Afghan stability, terrorist threats, and regional energy connectivity. General Munir's visit to Tehran at this precise juncture, when the US-Iran negotiation track is in a critical phase and both Qatari and Pakistani mediators are actively shuttling between the parties, makes it one of the most diplomatically significant military visits of the entire conflict.
Pezeshkian's message to Lavrov that American interference and military presence causes regional tension is consistent with Iran's consistent framing throughout the conflict, and his statement welcoming any regional initiative on peace, security, and development signals Tehran's readiness to engage a broader multilateral framework if the bilateral US-Iran track does not produce a settlement.
