Houthi Missile Attack Targets King Abdullah Financial District
A Houthi missile attack on Riyadh on Sunday targeted the King Abdullah Financial District and damaged an Aramco building, witnesses told AFP, in a major escalation.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - A Houthi missile attack on Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday, targeted the King Abdullah Financial District and damaged an Aramco building inside it, according to several witnesses who spoke to AFP.
One witness, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter, said: “The Aramco tower in KAFD was targeted.” The witness was using the common name for the district, which comes from the abbreviation of its English name. Two other witnesses confirmed that the glass building was damaged.
The Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government announced on Sunday morning that it had intercepted two ballistic missiles launched toward Riyadh by Iran-backed Yemeni Houthis.
It was the first time this important area of Riyadh has been targeted since the start of the current escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis.
The King Abdullah Financial District, in northern Riyadh, is one of the most prominent images of the economic and social reforms underway in the kingdom. Towering skyscrapers, offices and headquarters of international companies, luxury stores and leisure areas fill the district.
The area also includes residential complexes and a large metro station that sees heavy passenger traffic during the morning rush hours.
The targeting of the area marks a major escalation in the confrontation between the kingdom and the Houthis.
