ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - The Kurdistan Foundation and the Barzani Charity Foundation Announced on Sunday that they are helping the victims of Saturday night’s flash flood in Erbil, a day after water swept through neighborhoods, homes, shops and roads in the Kurdistan Region’s capital.

The Kurdistan Foundation, founded by Areen Masrour Barzani, said in a statement that its volunteers are helping affected residents in the field.

In another Statement, the Barzani Charity Foundation said its teams are serving citizens.

The Kurdistan Foundation thanked the volunteers and others who stepped forward unasked to help those in distress, and said such events show the spirit of cooperation and solidarity in Kurdish society. Emergency teams and volunteers went to the flooded areas overnight, and neighborhoods, homes, and residents’ property were damaged, according to the statements.

A wave of heavy rain reached the Kurdistan Region on Thursday, and it peaked on Saturday night. A very large amount of rain in a short time caused flooding in several neighborhoods and streets of Erbil and disrupted traffic. Two people died in Erbil, according to official figures: Mustafa, a 5-year-old boy, and a 25-year-old volunteer who drowned while rescuing people. The governorate declared Sunday a holiday in all kindergartens, schools and universities to protect residents and let municipal teams clean the streets, and the Kurdistan Regional Government put all its rescue and crisis teams on alert. Erbil Governor Omed Xoshnaw also ordered a count of residents’ losses, with the Barzani Charity Foundation, and an investigation into the causes.

Both Foundations led relief in the Region after last year’s floods. In December 2025, the Kurdistan Foundation assessed more than 500 families in Chamchamal with more than 60 volunteers and began rebuilding two flood-damaged schools, and the Barzani Charity Foundation distributed more than 6,000 hot meals, along with heaters and blankets, according to Kurdistan 24.
