ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdish Asayish security forces arrested 25 suspected ISIS facilitators in Halabja province in the Kurdistan Region on Wednesday.

Sulaimani Governorate Security Directorate announced, in a statement on Thursday, that the operation was carried out after it learned the group plotted to carry out “terrorist acts in the borders of Sulaimaniyah, Halabja and Garmian administration and destroy the security of the region.”

As a result of the operation, a number of ISIS suspects were arrested in Halabja city, Said Sadiq, Khurmal, Sirwan, and some villages of the Sharazur district.

Furthermore, Asayish confiscated weapons and explosives that the suspects allegedly planned to use in their “terrorist acts.”

“Iraqi Forces captured 25 #Daesh (Arabic acronym for ISIS) training and recruitment facilitators in Halabja, Iraq.” said the official Twitter account US-led Special Operations Joint Task Force-Levant (SOJTF LEVANT).

“This operation was aimed at increasing security in the region and reducing Daesh’s (ISIS) ability to plan attacks.”

The Sulaimani Governorate Security Directorate said it would release more details about the failed terrorist attempt with the ‘right evidence and documents’ in the near future.

Also, in late July, Asayish successfully dismantled an ISIS sleeper cell targeting the provinces of Sulaimani and Halabja, arresting at least two ISIS leaders.

“Four members were arrested in the province of Halabja, including two of the ISIS cells suspected of being high-ranking ISIS leaders that have overseen and participated in various terrorist activities, and a fifth member was arrested in the Sulaymaniyah (Suleimani) province,” the Asayish said in a July 28 press statement.
