ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A Kurdish paramedic has been killed in the notorious al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria, the Syria-based Rojava Information Centre (RIC) reported on Wednesday.

"A Kurdish Red Crescent (KRC) paramedic has been shot and killed in the main KRC clinic inside al-Hol camp," the RIC announced in a tweet on Tuesday. "KRC staff have evacuated the camp."

The local Hawar News Agency (ANHA) reported that Basem Muhammad Muhammad was attacked by two people who entered the medical center pretending to be patients.

The Syria-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) also reported Muhammed "was shot in the head and died immediately, after the shooters tried to enter the Kurdish Red Crescent's service checkpoint with fake identities."

Basem Muhammad was born in the northeastern city of Al-Hasakah in 1995. He was married and the father of two children.

There are about 60,000 residents in al-Hol camp. The majority of al-Hol's residents are Iraqis and Syrians. However, many foreign residents also live there, many of whom are believed to have ISIS links.

Local authorities have attempted to reduce pressure on the camp by repatriating Iraqis and expediting the departure of displaced Syrian families. Recently, 95 Iraqi families were repatriated from Syria's al-Hol camp.

In the last two months, there has been an uptick in violence and ISIS activities in the camp.

According to SOHR statistics, ISIS-affiliated suspects carried out ten murders in al-Hol in December 2021, all Syrians or Iraqis.

At least three people in al-Hol were killed this month, including the paramedic and an Iraqi refugee.

The terrorist organization has created instability in the camp by smuggling in weapons.
