ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq’s top security official announced on Sunday that his country is ready to host the fifth round of talks between regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Iraqi Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji made the remarks on Sunday during a meeting with the Iranian Supreme National Defense University president, Brigadier General Esmail Ahmadi-Moghaddam.

He also stressed the importance of understanding between Riyadh and Tehran and expressed Iraq’s optimism for the talks, saying Baghdad will host the fifth round of those talks very soon.

On Sunday, during the Munich Security Conference 2022 in Germany, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud said Riyadh is scheduling a new round of talks with Iran.

Iran and Saudi Arabia faced a breakdown in relations when Iranian protestors ransacked Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran in January 2016 after Saudi Arabia executed a top Shiite cleric, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

Baghdad hosted the last round of Iran-Saudi talks in September. It hopes to ease Saudi-Iran tensions and reduce the risk of further conflict in the region by hosting these bilateral talks.
