Duhok dam director highlights progress, future plans for water infrastructure
Erbil (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has placed significant emphasis on developing the economic infrastructure, particularly in the water sector, to ensure water security and better management of resources.
This was highlighted by Farhad Mohammed Tahir, Director of the Duhok Dam, in a recent interview with Kurdistan 24.
"The issue of dams is of paramount importance," Tahir stated, emphasizing the need for continuous work on dam projects until their completion.
He noted that the KRG's focus on the water sector is evident through its efforts to complete several critical dam projects across the region.
Last week, Tahir and other officials held an intensive meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources to expedite the completion of dam projects that were initiated but not finished in the previous cabinet.
Among these projects in Duhok province, the Khans Dam project was successfully completed at a cost of 9.2 billion dinars and has been operational for two seasons.
In addition to the Khans Dam, there are two other ongoing projects in the province: the Spanadu Dam in Amedi district and the Galiya Dam in Semela district.
Tahir assured that efforts are being made to ensure these projects are completed on time, with collaboration between a local company and a Turkish firm.
Tahir also highlighted the strategic importance of dams in the region, not just for water security but also for fostering good relations with the Iraqi government.
He mentioned that four dams are currently under construction in the Kurdistan Region, including the Bakrman Dam in Duhok, which is being implemented at a cost of 400 billion dinars as part of the broader framework of cooperation with the Iraqi government's plans.
The Director's comments reflect the KRG's commitment to advancing the water sector as a critical component of the region's economic infrastructure, ensuring sustainable water resources for the future.
