Barzani sets November 1 for parliamentary, presidential elections

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region President on Wednesday announced the date for Kurdistan’s upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.

The Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani in a presidential order set November 1, 2017, for both parliamentary and presidential elections in the Kurdistan Region.

Barzani urged all the related entities in the Kurdistan Region to take necessary steps and coordinate with the Independent High Electoral and Referendum Commission (IHERC) to arrange for the election.

In a meeting on June 7, chaired by Barzani, the political parties in Kurdistan agreed on holding an independence referendum on Sep. 25, 2017, and both presidential and parliamentary elections in November.

As the Kurdistan Region heads towards holding an independence referendum in September, some political parties expressed concerns over the possible postponement of the presidential and parliamentary elections.

Jutiyar Adil a member of the IHERC previously told Kurdistan 24 that the electoral commission had made its preparations for the next parliamentary elections but was waiting for the Kurdistan Region President’s final decision.
