UK Secretary of State commends KRG over de-escalating tensions with Baghdad

The Kurdistan Region Prime Minister emphasized the Region’s continued efforts to resolve all the issues through dialogue.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) –In a letter to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs expressed his support for the Kurdish government’s efforts to de-escalate tensions with Baghdad.

KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday received Jon Wilks, the UK Ambassador to Baghdad, in Erbil where he delivered a letter from the UK Secretary of State Boris Johnson, a statement from the KRG website said.

In the letter, Johnson commended the KRG’s efforts to de-escalate tensions with the Federal Government of Iraq by starting dialogue and resolving outstanding issues.

“Johnson emphasized that Britain will continue its efforts on the same direction [as the KRG],” the statement added.

The UK Secretary of State also highlighted the start of dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad on the basis of the Iraqi Constitution, expressing Britain’s support for the democratic process in the Kurdistan Region.

Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani also attended the meeting where the newly appointed UK Ambassador Wilks discussed the current developments between Erbil and Baghdad and his country’s efforts in resolving the issues between both sides, the KRG statement said.

PM Barzani emphasized the Region’s continued efforts to resolve all the issues through dialogue, asking Kurdistan’s friends to continue to prepare a groundwork for discussions with Baghdad.
