A senior British official on Saturday expressed his country's satisfaction with the efforts of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to protect the rights of all the people and components of the Region.
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – A senior British official on Saturday expressed his country’s satisfaction with the efforts of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to protect the rights of all the people and components of the Region.
Lord Tariq Ahmad, the United Kingdom Minister of State for the Commonwealth and United Nations, met with KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani in Erbil to discuss ways of reducing violence in disputed areas, including Kirkuk Province.
Lord Ahmad, who is also the UK Prime Minister’s Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict, spoke highly of the Kurdistan Region’s reputation as a haven for displaced persons and refugees.
Since the Islamic State’s (IS) emergence in Iraq and neighboring Syria in 2014, Kurdistan has welcomed nearly 1.8 million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and refugees, providing shelter and basic needs at camps across the Region.

In the meeting with Barzani, the British official, who was accompanied by his delegation, expressed the UK’s readiness to cooperate and coordinate with the Kurdish government to ensure IDPs and refugees continue to receive the aid they need.
KRG Prime Minister Barzani explained that “the protection of the rights of all individuals and components in the Region is a priority for the government of Kurdistan.”
He added that it was important the people of Kurdistan, as well as the displaced and refugees, are given access to education.
The two sides also discussed the ongoing efforts of Kurdish Peshmerga forces who continue to play a significant role in eliminating terror from the region.
