PM Barzani discusses reconstruction, economic recovery with US Ambassador to Iraq

The KRG Prime Minister recently criticized the US' policy toward resolving the issues between Erbil and Baghdad.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday met with the US Ambassador to Iraq to discuss a range of topics in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

According to a KRG statement, Prime Minister Barzani and Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani received Douglas Silliman, the US Ambassador to Iraq, and an accompanying delegation in Erbil

“The meeting discussed the recent developments in the dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad, elections in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, and the international conference for Iraq reconstruction in Kuwait,” the statement read.

The meeting focused on factors related to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region’s economy, including “facilitating the process of reconstruction and paving the way for the private sector and foreign investors and companies to participate in the process,” the KRG statement added.

The Kurdish and American diplomats also discussed matters related to the region, as well as the post-Islamic State (IS) era.

In a press conference on Sunday, Prime Minister Barzani criticized the US’ policy toward resolving the ongoing issues between Erbil and Baghdad.

Barzani said that if he met with American officials again, he would ask them to clarify what they mean by supporting “a strong KRG” because their actions do not match their statements.

“I will ask them about their current policy and whether it will lead to a strong regional government or not. I will ask them this question,” Prime Minister Barzani told reporters.
