Kurdish leaders share messages of hope on eve of New Year

Kurdish leaders on Monday congratulated the people of the Kurdistan Region, praising their resolve and stating that better days were ahead with a recovery from the economic crisis imminent.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdish leaders on Monday congratulated the people of the Kurdistan Region, praising their resolve and stating that better days were ahead with a recovery from the economic crisis imminent.

“Tonight, as Kurdistanis come together with friends and family to celebrate, I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year,” Kurdistan Region Security Council Chancellor, Masrour Barzani, began in a statement.

Masrour highlighted the year’s difficulties for the people of the region, who have suffered from a financial crisis with only a slight recovery apparent.

“But even when the challenges have seemed great, and the odds long, your resilience has shown we can overcome them together,” he added.

The Chancellor, himself the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) nominee for the post of the region’s prime minister, hoped that a “strong government” would emerge to respond to the “needs and aspirations” of the people.

Talks, initiated by the KDP that topped the results of the 111-seat parliamentary elections, are ongoing with the region’s various parties. The parties are hopeful that a coalition government would address the region’s economic woes.

The Prime Minister of the caretaker government, Nechirvan Barzani, thanked the people of the Kurdish region for their patience through the years of the crisis and highlighted that the area was distinguished for its lack of “political, national, or sectarian conflict” in the Middle East.

Nechirvan congratulated all the diverse communities of the Kurdistan Region, and reiterated that the better days were ahead as “recovery awaits the people of Kurdistan.”

Masoud Barzani also shared his New Year’s message, hoping that “the coming year brings more stability and peace to the world.”

He also underscored the sacrifice the Peshmerga forces have made to protect the region and its people from the security threats. The Peshmerga’s “bravery continues to make us proud and to the families of those who paid the ultimate price.”
