ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The hailstones damaged the fields of fruits in the countryside of Shno city on Saturday. It has been a big loss to the farmers in those areas, and many different types of fruits damaged.

Shno locates in the south of Urmia in east of Kurdistan, the sudden hit by the hailstones destroyed majority of the crops especially fruits in all these villages in the area.

“The damage happened to apples, cherries, apricots, and peaches, but the government doesn’t help, they don’t distribute pesticide, herbicide or soil fertilizer” The farmer Mohammed Rasooli stated.

Majority of the farmers reported and complained to the authorities and agriculture management about their crops destroyed completely with the hailstones. They have requested to be compensated by the government, but the farmers believe the government is not ready to do so.

The natural disasters have left farmers being overloaded with the loss and not to get recouped.

Bazid Sohrabi, another farmer, said “it’s destroyed all our summer fruits. The agriculture management and the other relevant departments, didn’t make any initiations, or offered any aid to compensate our loss”

The Kurdish farmers don’t have an agriculture products indemnity, any incidents happen by the natural disasters like hailstones or floods, there won’t be any types of reimbursement.

There is a type of agricultural products insurance, during damages by the natural disasters, if the farmers’ fields have not been insured, they get compensated, but mostly, this recoup wouldn’t cover farmers from the east of Kurdistan.
