Emergence of 'Al-Qurbanion' group sparks concern over youth suicide by lottery in Iraq
Operating under the guise of religious ideology, the group systematically brainwashes vulnerable youths, exploiting their disillusionment with state institutions.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - In recent developments, a concerning group known as "al-Qurbanion" has surfaced in central and southern Iraq, advocating a disturbing practice where young individuals are encouraged to commit suicide through a lottery system.
Reports indicate that this group, self-identified as "al-Qurbanion," has tragically influenced at least five youths to take their lives in Dhi Qar province alone.
Operating under the guise of religious ideology, the group systematically brainwashes vulnerable youths, exploiting their disillusionment with state institutions.
Security observer Ahmad Yasri has attributed the group's growth to a pervasive lack of trust in governmental bodies. He warns that if left unchecked, the "al-Qurbanion" movement could escalate into a broader security threat, fueled by extremist Shiite beliefs.
Iraqi security agencies have responded swiftly, apprehending 30 individuals across Dhi Qar, Basra, and Wasit on charges related to their involvement with "al-Qurbanion."
These arrests follow a series of suicides linked to the group, prompting fears that it may evolve into an armed faction if pursued aggressively.
The Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) recently announced a major crackdown on "al-Qurbanion," underscoring the constitutional prohibition against extremist activities.
Spokesperson Arshad al-Hakim detailed successful intelligence operations leading to the dismantling of the group, revealing their ritualistic practices involving sacrificial lotteries purportedly to honor Imam Ali.
Legal experts emphasize that such groups face severe penalties under Iraqi law, including life imprisonment or death sentences.
As efforts intensify to combat the influence of "al-Qurbanion," authorities stress the critical role of religious and cultural institutions in countering deviant ideologies that endanger Iraq's youth.
The situation remains fluid as security forces continue their operations to root out remaining supporters of "al-Qurbanion" across southern Iraq, aiming to prevent further tragedies and uphold national security.
