Major Captagon seizure in Basra as authorities crack down on drug networks

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – On Monday, a significant amount of Captagon pills was seized in Basra province, a security source reported.
"Sixty kilograms of Captagon pills were seized, hidden within an embroidered piece of cloth, in the al-Najm fields area in Safwan," the security source told local media.
The source added that the security forces arrested the suspect, who had attempted to destroy some of the equipment by burning it.
Inas Karim, director of the Iraqi Drug-Free Organization, revealed that 700 drug addicts, including 45 women, have received treatment in the past six months.
However, she emphasized the need for advanced detection equipment. "Arresting traffickers and networks alone will not end the drug threat. We must expand prevention mechanisms," she stated.
Member of Iraqi Parliament, Yasser Iskandar Wattout noted a 50 percent increase in the treatment of drug addicts compared to last year.
"This increase gives addicts a second chance to return to normal life," he said, highlighting the importance of dedicated staff for these efforts.
On July 5, a spokesperson for the Iraqi Interior Ministry announced the arrest of 230 drug networks over the past year, including 27 international ones, involving more than 19,000 drug offenders.
