ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Mahma Khalil, a member of the Iraqi Parliament, revealed on Tuesday that he has called for the formation of a committee to visit Syria to pressure the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to release Yezidi women currently held in the al-Hol camp. Khalil made this statement during an interview with Kurdistan24.

According to Khalil, approximately 600 Yezidi women are currently detained in the al-Hol camp located in Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava). Despite the significant number of Yezidi women in the camp, the Iraqi government has been reluctant to facilitate their repatriation.

The al-Hol camp was initially established to provide shelter and essential services to refugees and internally displaced persons affected by the Syrian Civil War. It has since become a temporary haven for women and children caught in the conflict, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.

The Yezidi community has faced severe persecution, most notably by ISIS, which targeted them for their unique religious beliefs. In 2014, thousands of Yezidis were killed or abducted by ISIS, leading to a significant humanitarian disaster. The detainment of Yezidi women in the al-Hol camp is a grim reminder of this dark chapter in their history, and efforts to secure their release are crucial for addressing the ongoing trauma faced by the Yezidi people.
