ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraqi political analyst Mohammed al-Saedi has alleged that high-ranking political figures are implicated in the notorious "theft of the century" and demands their exposure.

Al-Saedi expressed astonishment over the recent television appearance of Nour Zuhair, a prime suspect in the $2.5 billion tax deposit theft, being portrayed as a businessman. "This is a surprising and strange development," he said to Kurdistan 24.

Al-Saedi insists the Iraqi public and media have the right to know who enabled Zuhair to carry out such a significant theft. He believes influential figures are involved and complicit in the crime.

Zuhair is due to face trial in Baghdad's Central Criminal Court on August 27th. However, his recent televised self-defense and demand for a public trial has drawn criticism from the Communications and Media Commission, who believe his actions violate media regulations.

The "theft of the century" refers to the embezzlement of $2.5 billion in tax deposits from foreign companies held in Iraqi government banks.

Several businessmen and influential figures are believed to have participated through fraud and forgery.

While some suspects have been arrested, most have fled, and only a fraction of the stolen funds have been recovered.

Who is Nour Zuhair?

Nour Zuhair, a prominent but controversial Iraqi businessman, is the primary suspect in the tax deposit theft.

Basra MP Mustafa Sand confirmed Zuhair's residence in the UAE and warned of extradition through Interpol if he fails to appear in court.

Zuhair's trial was initially set for August 14th but was postponed to August 27th after his non-appearance. His release under unclear circumstances a month after his arrest has also raised questions.
