ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – There has been opposition, protests and demonstrations against the recent proposed bill to the Iraqi Federal Parliament about amending the Personal Status Law.
According to the timetable announced by the Media and Information Office at the Iraqi Federal Parliament, the Parliamentary debate on Tuesday, will dispute the topic of the second reading of two articles in the amended Iraqi Personal Status Law.
The Iraqi Parliament is to vote on Article 5 of the bill to restore ownerships of property to their landlords, those properties occupied during the Ba'ath regime.
In the second part of the debate, bill of which the Article 15 of the Agricultural Leaseholders will be voted on.
The third part of the dispute scheduled to vote on the amendments to Articles 2 and 10 of Law no. 188 of 1959 on the Personal Status Law.

The official sources stated that Iraqi authorities have been warned not to amend this law because of the legalization form given to critical issues in the country at the individual level, one of those issues that trouble is the underage marriage, and getting young girls married forcibly.
Also, it is scheduled to hold a first reading to 20 articles in the bill to combat the forced disappeared people.
It is planned to present a bill about the protection of the copy rights and rights to reserve, as well as the last part of the debate covers the first full reading of the Civil Aviation Bill.
Regarding the issue of amending Iraqi Personal Status Law, a member of the Legal Committee at the Iraqi Parliament said “the second reading of the Personal Status Law No. 188 of 1959 will be disputed, but this time the articles of wedding age restriction, child to live with order, custody after divorce will be disputed”
“The current law allows the age 15 to get married, but they are intending to set a closer age to it, to be 14 years, with the restrictions of adult carer to be present during the marriage contract and at the wedding”
