KRG announces start of new academic year with over 1.8 million students

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Education has announced that the new academic year 2024-2025 will begin with the participation of more than 1.72 million students in public schools and over 132,000 students in private institutions.
Saman Siwayli, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, revealed the figures during an interview with Kurdistan24 on Tuesday. Siwayli added that the ministry employs more than 118,000 teachers, alongside 38,000 contract teachers, who will guide students through the upcoming academic year.
The Ministry has also made significant strides in improving school infrastructure. "So far, 1,700 educational buildings have been renovated, and 194 new schools and buildings have been completed under the KRG ninth cabinet," Siwayli stated.
In addition to the Kurdish students, 191,000 Arab students are currently enrolled in schools across the Kurdistan Region, highlighting the region’s commitment to inclusive education. Siwayli also addressed the ongoing issue of overcrowded schools, noting that only 13 schools in the Kurdistan Region operate on a three-shift schedule, indicating a reduction in such instances.
The KRG's Ministry of Education continues to prioritize educational development and infrastructure as the new school year begins.
