ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) - The Kurdistan Region's Coordinator for International Advocacy, Dr. Dindar Zebari explained the Kurdistan Regional Government made serious efforts for the anti-drugs and, in this regard, Law No. 1 of 2020 issued the law of anti-drugs and mental impact, substances and a high committee was formed by the International.
On October 15th, with KRG’s Prime Minister’s supervise, an international conference was held. Regarding the treatment of the illegal drugs also recreation substances and becoming addicts.
According to Dr. Zebari’s statement, Kurdistan Regional Government made serious efforts to form rehabilitation centers for addicts.

In Erbil, a center for illegal drugs, substances and addicted people, designated for treatment, it locates in Shaqlawa district. At the moment, preparations are being made to provide necessities at that center.
Zebari stressed about special teams who will visit suspected places, to investigate, find the various sources of drugs in the Kurdistan Region, relevant parties in KRG.
Depending on Mr. Zebari’s word, (612) visits made to pharmacies, drug stores, companies and wards.
63 pharmacies, 22 companies, 33 wards and 4 drug stores were shut down.
The security force highlighted the number of drug detainees and convicts in the Kurdistan Region and according to the available information, from December 1st, 2024 to August 30th, 2024, the number of detainees and conviction, charges of drug use and trafficking was as follows:
5162 convicted and detained in the Kurdistan Region faced their sentences, including (29) women users, and during this period more than 622 kg various drugs and the amount (1.962.200.00) tons, nine hundred and sixty-two kilograms One hundred grams of captagon (amphetamine) were seized.
“Our coordination with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is at a high level and we conducted a detailed study focusing on drug trafficking and methods of countering it,” Zebari added.
Zebari believed that forementioned step, on the other hand, the governmental agencies and organizations will be aware and facilitate their work.
On another hand, the Canadian Government announced a financial support project to assist the Kurdistan Regional and the Federal Government,
He confirmed that will be an important step to meet the Kurdistan Regional Government’s needs, to provide logistic and necessary and advanced equipment, medical tools, by digitizing data, strengthening checkpoints.
