ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – On Tuesday, the Chief of Diwan of the Kurdistan Parliament Mr. Ardalan Muhammad Sarspi, announced that the President of the Kurdistan Region will have 10 days to issue a decree calling for the first session of the new parliament once all electoral appeals are resolved.
Speaking at a press conference in response to Kurdistan24's reporter Hoshmand Sadeq about the first session of the sixth parliamentary term, Sarspi explained, "After the resolution of electoral appeals, the Regional President has 10 days to issue a decree. Subsequently, with proper coordination, a date will be set for the first parliamentary session."
Sarspi further clarified that according to internal procedures, "The parliamentary meeting will be chaired by the oldest member until the Speaker of Parliament, Deputy Speaker, and Secretary are elected."
The Kurdistan Region held its sixth parliamentary elections in two phases:
- Oct. 18, 2024: Special voting for over 215,000 security forces members, including Peshmerga, Asayish, police, and Interior Ministry personnel
- Oct. 20, 2024: General voting day, with 2,686,578 eligible voters participating
This upcoming session will mark the beginning of the Kurdistan Parliament's sixth term, representing a crucial step in the Region's democratic process.
The selection of parliamentary leadership through voting by the oldest serving member is a standard democratic procedure designed to ensure a smooth transition between legislative terms.
