ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – On Sunday, the Muthanna Water Directorate issued a public notice announcing the suspension of water supply across the governorate following an oil spill in the Rumaitha River that occurred yesterday evening.

In its statement, the directorate confirmed that "all water projects along the river have been suspended due to an oil spill that contaminated the Rumaitha River since yesterday evening."

The statement noted that Muthanna Governor Muhannad Abdul-Ali, his assistant for water resources Yousif Sawadi, and relevant departments from both the Water Resources Directorate and Environmental Directorate are aware of the situation and working to resolve the crisis.

Muthanna province, located in southern Iraq, relies heavily on river water for both domestic and agricultural use.

Oil spills affecting water sources have become an increasing environmental concern in Iraq, where aging infrastructure and industrial accidents can have immediate impacts on public water supply.

Such incidents highlight the ongoing challenges in maintaining both environmental safety and public utilities in the region.
