ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – At the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) representatives met with Brazilian officials to discuss climate change impacts and preparations for COP30, which will be hosted by Brazil.
Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, Senior Advisor to the KRG Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs and Climate Change, engaged in talks with Liliam Chagas, Director for Climate at Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting highlighted shared concerns and potential avenues for collaboration between the Kurdistan Region and Brazil in combating climate change.
Abdul Rahman and Chagas explored the challenges faced by forests and biodiversity in both regions.
While the ecosystems differ vastly—the Kurdistan Region’s woodlands contrasting with the expansive Amazon rainforest—the officials noted the universal threat climate change poses to natural habitats.
The exchange of knowledge on preserving these vital ecosystems and mitigating environmental damage was a key component of their discussion.
The two sides also deliberated on strategic priorities for COP30, which will convene in Brazil. They examined opportunities for international cooperation, particularly in data collection, effective fund utilization, and the implementation of impactful environmental projects.
Both officials underscored the need for global unity and strategic action in addressing the accelerating climate crisis.
The meeting at COP29 served as a crucial step in fostering a collaborative approach to climate action between the KRG and Brazil, with hopes of yielding substantive outcomes at the next climate conference.
