ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - A member of the Iraqi Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee has warned that continued defiance by armed groups against state authority could plunge the country into conflict.
In a statement to local media, Haider al-Salami emphasized, "All armed groups must come under state control. Their continued insubordination risks dragging the country into war and conflict."
Salami highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to bring armed groups under control, noting that "some groups maintain foreign connections, which complicates the achievement of complete stability."
He distinguished between different armed entities, stating that "the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) is a government institution governed by specific legislation, while other groups have achieved nothing in the past 21 years."
Iraq has struggled with the challenge of multiple armed groups operating within its borders since 2003. These groups, some with alleged foreign ties, have been a source of ongoing security concerns and political tension.
The government's efforts to assert control over all armed groups align with broader attempts to strengthen state sovereignty and maintain stability in the region.
