Cornerstone for groundbreaking drug rehabilitation center is laid in Erbil
The center, the first of its kind in the Kurdistan Region, will be constructed on a 13,000-square-meter plot along Erbil's 120-meter Road, on land provided by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

ERBIL (Kurdistan24)- Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art drug awareness and rehabilitation center in Erbil on Tuesday. The pioneering facility, a joint initiative between the Barzani Charity Foundation and LDS organization, marks a significant milestone in the region's healthcare infrastructure.
The center, the first of its kind in the Kurdistan Region, will be constructed on a 13,000-square-meter plot along Erbil's 120-meter Road, on land provided by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
The construction is scheduled for completion within 18 months, during which time the center's staff will be selected and undergo comprehensive training by international experts.
Concurrent with the construction, the center will begin implementing community awareness programs about drug addiction risks, working in coordination with local and international experts from the LDS organization.
The facility will operate according to international medical and therapeutic standards, following a comprehensive four-pillar approach: awareness, detoxification, follow-up care, and social reintegration.
The center will house the following facilities:
- Administrative department
- Security and safety division
- Interview rooms
- Medical clinic
- Drug detoxification unit
- Laboratory and medical examination department
- Psychological counseling and treatment section
- Research and awareness department
- Patient accommodation
- Physical and sports activities section
- Recreation and leisure facilities
- Parking area
- Green spaces comprising 25% of the project area
This initiative represents the Kurdistan Region's most ambitious project to date in addressing substance abuse and rehabilitation. The comprehensive facility's establishment comes at a crucial time when regional authorities are intensifying efforts to combat drug trafficking and provide modern healthcare solutions for affected individuals.
The collaboration between the Barzani Charity Foundation and LDS brings together local expertise with international standards in addiction treatment and rehabilitation.
