ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – As winter approaches, the Erbil Civil Defense has issued a set of essential safety guidelines to help residents prepare for harsh weather. Announced on Saturday, these measures focus on vehicle readiness, heating equipment safety, and precautionary steps during cold conditions.

The department advised residents to regularly check weather updates from official sources and stressed the importance of ensuring proper ventilation when using heaters to prevent risks like suffocation.

“Stay indoors during weather advisories unless absolutely necessary,” the statement urged. “If you must go out, wear warm clothing and sturdy footwear to avoid slipping on icy surfaces.”

Additionally, the guidelines cautioned against handling snow without protective gloves after conditions stabilize and reminded residents to avoid valley streams and flood-prone areas, especially as melting snow increases the risk of flash floods.

Winter safety is particularly vital in the Kurdistan Region, where mountainous areas like Erbil experience extreme cold and heavy snowfall.

The Civil Defense Department regularly issues such recommendations to minimize risks and protect the public during severe winter weather.
