ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – In an interview with Kurdistan 24, on Saturday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Electricity, Kamal Mohammad highlighted that generating electricity from gas has been within the ninth cabinet's major plans, and the KRG Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani set that issue to be in the high priority for the 9th cabinet to seriously tackle the ongoing problem that has been experienced from the state-electricity provider.
In an inquiry about generating electricity from the gas-generating wastes in the oil refinery fields, in Kurdistan Region, Kamal emphasized that the initiatives started from the KRG's 9th cabinet, by depending on the electricity system in Kurdistan Region, which is consisted of 4 major parts, producing, transmitting, distributing and controlling.
During the interview, the electricity minister confirmed that generating electricity increased by 1,340 MW, "we were capable to add on 1,340 MW of electricity to the national electricity supply grid, included the following stations, 300 MW to Khabat area with steam turbine, 750 MW in Bazian, 165 MW in Garmian area, 38 MW in Deraluk in a different way by Hydroelectric turbines are turned by water flowing down through the pipes, that it never happened since 1970s in Iraq"
He further added "the 29-megawatt plant was added on, in the beginning by diesel, which it cost the government too much, while all three plants had been out of order for several years, thereafter, by using diesel, we changed the operation into crude oil and the effect was noticeable”
Ministry of Electricity's Plan for 2025
"The ministry's plan is to add up 500 megawatts of electricity to the Khurmal electricity station by the first quarter in 2025, in a new project," He said "the gas-generating wastes plant is the first project in Kurdistan Region and Iraq, which has been implemented with the KRG Prime Minister's support to prevent the environmental pollution, getting rid of gas-wastes by reusing and converting to electrical energy,"
