ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A gunman assassinated two senior judges and injured a civilian at Iran’s Supreme Court in Tehran on Saturday, the judiciary’s Mizan Online News Agency, reported.
Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) identified the victims as, “Hojjatoleslam Ali Razini, head of Branch 39 of the Supreme Court, and Hojjatoleslam Mohammad Moqiseh, head of Branch 53, they were both known for dealing with cases associated with crimes against national security, spies, and terrorism.”
While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, Mizan Online News Agency noted that “the assailant was not directly involved in any case under review by the court and the authorities have launched an investigation to uncover further details.”
According to Mizan Online News Agency, both judges had a significant history within Iran’s judiciary system, previously, in January 1998, Hojatoleslam Wal Muslimin Razini was also the target of an assassination attempt by “terrorists.”
Per the agency, Razini, who was the head of the Tehran Judiciary at the time, was targeted and injured by motorcyclists who planted a magnetic bomb on his vehicle while he was leaving his workplace on the night of the 18th of Ramadan.
Although attacks on judicial figures in Iran have rarely occurred in the past, Judge Hassan Moghaddas was assassinated in Tehran in 2005. Influential cleric Abbas Ali Soleimani was assassinated in April 2023. In October 2023, a Shia cleric was killed in Kazeroon, southern Iran, after leading Friday prayers.
Iranian authorities have faced increasing challenges in securing high-profile officials amid rising political tensions and societal unrest in Iran and the region.
