Erbil's stray dog roundup efforts show significant progress
As of Jan. 23, 13,244 stray dogs have been gathered and housed, according to Hassan Ismail, director of the Erbil stray dog shelters.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Erbil's stray dog roundup teams are ramping up their efforts, successfully rescuing and sheltering more dogs each day, with an impressive increase in the number of animals being taken to the shelter.
As of Jan. 23, 13,244 stray dogs have been gathered and housed, according to Hassan Ismail, director of the Erbil stray dog shelters. "The dogs are doing well," Ismail told Kurdistan24 on Wednesday, highlighting the shelter's efforts to provide care and safety for the animals.
The initiative has significantly reduced the stray dog population in the region. In 2023, 310 people were bitten by stray dogs, but this number is expected to drop to 165 in 2024, a 47% decrease.
The addition of two new vehicles has further bolstered the shelter's efforts. These vehicles allow teams to round up to 90 dogs daily—three times more than the previous average of 30. This increase in capacity is expected to accelerate progress in addressing the stray dog issue.
Erbil's commitment to improving public safety and animal welfare is evident through these efforts, with the shelter continuing to make strides in protecting both residents and animals.
