ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Despite ongoing efforts to clear heavy snowfall from the Warte Pass road, authorities are urging drivers to avoid the route due to persistent icy conditions and traffic hazards.
On Friday, Shorsh Hassan, Director of Warte Municipality, told Kurdistan24 that the region has witnessed continuous snowfall over the past two days, leading to severe traffic disruptions on the strategic mountain pass.
"Snow removal teams have been actively working to clear the road and spread salt, but the icy conditions make it extremely dangerous for vehicles," Hassan stated.
Warte Pass is a critical connection between the independent administrations of Soran and Raparin, serving as a vital commercial artery with numerous trucks using the route daily.
However, its steep inclines and sharp curves make it particularly hazardous during winter storms, increasing the risk of accidents.
"Even though we are making progress in clearing the road, snowfall and freezing temperatures continue to create obstacles," Hassan explained. "We strongly advise drivers to refrain from using the road until conditions improve."
Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have urged drivers to exercise patience and seek alternative routes when necessary.
The municipality has also called on travelers to stay updated on weather forecasts and road conditions before planning their journeys.
As winter weather continues to impact the region, officials stress the importance of prioritizing safety and heeding warnings from local authorities to prevent road-related incidents.
