UN Secretary-General: New Syria Must Protect Rights of All Citizens
The UN chief stressed the need for a unified Syria, free from external interference, where territorial integrity is preserved.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reiterated his support for a comprehensive political process in Syria that guarantees the rights of all citizens.
Speaking via video message on Thursday, during the 19th assembly of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) in Rome, Guterres emphasized the importance of an inclusive political framework that respects the rights of all communities.
"We fully support a broad and inclusive political process that ensures the rights of all Syrians are upheld," Guterres stated, highlighting the significance of fairness and inclusivity in shaping Syria’s future.
A Fragile Middle East in Turmoil
The UN chief acknowledged that the Middle East is undergoing profound challenges, marked by instability and uncertainty.
"The region is passing through a period of deep turmoil, filled with mistrust and insecurity," Guterres said, noting that despite these challenges, there remains an opportunity for political progress.
He stressed the need for a unified Syria, free from external interference, where territorial integrity is preserved.
"Our goal is to see Syria emerge as a sovereign, unified state where the rights of all citizens are safeguarded, and the country’s territorial integrity remains intact," he added.
A Call for Lasting Political Solutions
Guterres’s remarks come amid increased diplomatic discussions regarding Syria’s future, following the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024.
The international community continues to push for a political transition that ensures representation for all groups, particularly those who suffered from decades of marginalization.
With ongoing discussions on Syria’s reconstruction and governance, the UN Secretary-General’s statement reinforces the need for a transparent and fair political process that leads to lasting stability in the country.
