Türkiye to Prosecute Suspects in Attack on Iraqi Consulate

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Turkish government has pledged to bring the perpetrators of the recent attack on the Iraqi Consulate in Istanbul to justice, as confirmed by Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oncu Keçeli.

On Friday evening, unidentified assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on the consulate building using a Kalashnikov rifle before fleeing the scene. While no casualties or material damage were reported, the attack has heightened security concerns.

Speaking on Saturday, Keçeli reassured the public that Turkish security forces are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. “Efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects are ongoing, and they will be brought before the judiciary,” he stated.

He further emphasized Türkiye’s commitment to ensuring the safety of diplomatic missions, adding that the authorities are in constant communication with their Iraqi counterparts. “All necessary measures have been implemented to guarantee the security of Iraq’s diplomatic missions in Ankara, Istanbul, and Gaziantep,” Keçeli noted.

Call for Enhanced Diplomatic Security

Turkish officials have yet to identify the perpetrators behind the recent attack on the Iraqi consulate, but the incident has reignited concerns over the security of diplomatic missions in the region. In response, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged strict compliance with international conventions safeguarding diplomatic premises and personnel.
