ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The high Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, has reiterated that Syria’s new government must be inclusive and ensure representation for all components of the country to achieve lasting peace and stability. Speaking at a press conference in Cairo on Sunday, Kallas reaffirmed the EU’s support for Syria’s transitional phase.
Kallas stressed that establishing a stable Syria requires a government that guarantees equitable representation for all political and social groups. She warned that excluding any component from the political process would undermine the prospects for sustainable peace.
"We firmly support the formation of a new Syrian government that respects the rights of all components. Inclusivity is the foundation of any successful political process," she stated.
EU’s Ongoing Commitment
The EU official reaffirmed the bloc’s continued support for the Syrian people, emphasizing that humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts must go hand in hand with genuine political reforms.
"It is essential to address the urgent needs of Syrians, but true progress will only come with real political change," Kallas added.
She also called on all Syrian parties to engage constructively in the political transition, underlining the importance of inclusive dialogue for a long-term resolution.
Sanctions to Remain Until Reforms Are Achieved
Regarding the EU’s sanctions on Syria, The EU foreign policy chief last week called for steps to lift sanctions imposed on Syria since the regime of Bashar al-Assad ruled the country.
The European Union has maintained strict sanctions on Syria, targeting individuals and entities linked to the regime, citing human rights violations and the lack of political progress.
Kallas concluded by reaffirming the EU's dedication to supporting the Syrian people in their pursuit of justice, stability, and inclusive governance.
