ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – In a pivotal meeting underscoring the need for political dialogue, President Masoud Barzani received Muthanna al-Samarrai, head of Iraq’s Azm Alliance, on Wednesday at his headquarters in Pirmam. The meeting comes amid a tense and shifting political landscape in Iraq and the broader Middle East.

According to a statement released by Barzani Headquarters, the two leaders held in-depth discussions on the political developments unfolding in Iraq and the surrounding region. Their dialogue focused on the challenges facing the country, particularly at a time when Iraq is preparing for parliamentary elections and facing internal and external pressures tied to regional instability, economic uncertainty, and ongoing reform efforts.

Both sides emphasized the critical importance of enhancing coordination between Iraq’s political factions. They agreed that overcoming the nation’s persistent obstacles—including disputes over governance and economic recovery —requires constructive engagement and a shared commitment to preserving the country’s stability and national unity.

President Barzani has consistently advocated for political dialogue as the cornerstone of Iraq’s democratic future and a path to avoiding cycles of violence, marginalization, and division. His meeting with al-Samarrai highlights the Kurdistan Region’s ongoing engagement with Iraqi political actors across the political spectrum, especially those seeking consensus-driven approaches to Iraq’s long-standing challenges.

The Azm Alliance, a Sunni-majority parliamentary bloc, has played an active role in Iraqi politics in recent years, calling for reforms, inclusive governance, and improved federal-regional relations. Muthanna al-Samarrai's meeting with President Barzani signals the bloc’s interest in deepening cooperation with Kurdish leadership and contributing to a national framework that prioritizes dialogue and unity.
