ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on Wednesday praised U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Syria, calling it a “historic and courageous step” that paves the way for national recovery and regional peace. The announcement came just hours after Sharaa returned from Riyadh, where he met with Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
In a televised address following his return from the Gulf summit, President Sharaa expressed deep appreciation for what he described as a “transformative decision” that lifts the burden of sanctions imposed during the era of former President Bashar al-Assad.
“President Trump’s decision removed the suffering of our people, laid the foundations for regional stability, and marked the beginning of Syria’s rebirth,” Sharaa said.
A New Chapter for Syria
Reflecting on Syria’s post-Assad trajectory, Sharaa acknowledged the painful legacy of civil conflict, repression, and economic collapse, but reaffirmed his commitment to rebuilding a state for “all Syrians, regardless of sect or ethnicity.”
“Coexistence has always been our historical legacy. The divisions that tore us apart were a product of foreign interference—today, we reject them all,” he asserted.
He recalled the tragedies under the former regime, noting that Syria had been “reduced to a repellent environment for its people and neighbors,” while expressing hope that the international support now emerging will help restore Syria’s place in the region and the world.
Syria’s Diplomatic Reemergence
President Sharaa outlined his government’s efforts over the past six months, including national reconciliation, internal security reform, the drafting of a new constitution, and sweeping legislative and economic changes. He also cited his diplomatic outreach as crucial in reshaping Syria’s international image.
“We participated in global forums, raised our flag at the United Nations, and began forging strategic ties with both Arab and Western nations,” he said.
Sharaa detailed his recent engagements with several world leaders, including Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Emirati leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, and French President Emmanuel Macron. Each, he said, pledged to support Syria’s reintegration into the international community.
“I saw genuine warmth in the eyes of our Arab brothers. I was promised assistance to lift sanctions, and today we are seeing those promises fulfilled,” al-Sharaa stated.
Praise for Trump and Regional Leaders
Al-Sharaa thanked all regional leaders for their support, singling out President Trump’s decision as a bold gesture of goodwill.
“President Trump responded to this wave of love with a historic and courageous act. He kept his word,” al-Sharaa said. “The road ahead is long, but the work has begun. Today marks the dawn of Syria’s modern renaissance.”
He concluded his speech by reaffirming Syria’s commitment to fostering a robust investment climate, reforming economic legislation, and opening the door to both domestic and international capital to contribute to reconstruction and inclusive development.
“Syria is for all Syrians and for everyone living on this blessed land. Our future will be built through unity, prosperity, and shared purpose.”
