Leyla Zana Praises Kurdistan Region’s Role in Promoting Peace and Kurdish Identity
Zana recalled key moments in the Kurdish peace efforts, emphasizing the historic initiative launched by President Masoud Barzani in 2013.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Renowned Kurdish politician Leyla Zana on Thursday hailed the Kurdistan Region’s vital contribution to advancing the peace process in Turkey, describing it as a beacon of hope and an inspiration for the world.
Speaking at a press conference during her long-awaited visit to the Region, Zana expressed deep admiration for Kurdistan’s progress and peaceful stance. “I haven’t visited the Kurdistan Region in seven years, and I have thought of Kurdistan often. We hope that it will be a beautiful example for the whole world,” she said.
Zana recalled key moments in the Kurdish peace efforts, emphasizing the historic initiative launched by President Masoud Barzani in 2013. “The Kurdistan Region played a significant role in advancing the peace process, and that role continues today,” she affirmed.
Reflecting on the broader Kurdish struggle, Zana underscored a transformative shift in approach. “We changed our policy of struggle; most importantly, we were able to shift the perception that Kurds do not exist,” she stated.
The first phase of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) disarmament initiative will take place in Sulaimani province on Friday, where 30 to 40 PKK fighters are expected to lay down their arms in an official ceremony.
