U.S. Envoy Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Syria Amid Renewed Violence
"President Trump’s decision to lift sanctions was a principled step, offering the Syrian people a chance to move beyond years of unimaginable suffering and atrocities," Ambassador Barrack wrote in a post on his official account on X.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, on Sunday issued a strongly worded statement urging all warring parties in Syria to halt hostilities and embrace peace, warning that continued violence is jeopardizing the country’s fragile path toward stability.
"President Trump’s decision to lift sanctions was a principled step, offering the Syrian people a chance to move beyond years of unimaginable suffering and atrocities," Ambassador Barrack wrote in a post published on his official account on X. "The international community has largely rallied behind the nascent Syrian government, watching with cautious optimism as it seeks to transition from a legacy of pain to a future of hope."
However, Barrack expressed alarm at recent violent escalations on the ground, describing them as "brutal acts by warring factions" that are "undermining the government’s authority and disrupting any semblance of order."
In a clear call for de-escalation, he emphasized that “all factions must immediately lay down their arms, cease hostilities, and abandon cycles of tribal vengeance.”
“Syria stands at a critical juncture,” he added. “Peace and dialogue must prevail—and prevail now.”

Barrack’s remarks come amid a resurgence of intercommunal violence in southern Syria, particularly in Suwayda and Daraa, where local militias and armed tribal groups have clashed in recent weeks, raising fears of broader destabilization.
The U.S. and other members of the international community have expressed cautious support for Syria’s ongoing post-conflict political transition, but recent violence has cast doubt on the viability of any peaceful resolution unless immediate steps are taken to restore security and accountability.
