ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – In a landmark development for the region, Erbil has become the first city in Iraq to secure uninterrupted 24-hour water and electricity, a senior government official confirmed on Sunday, as the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) signals its readiness to share its model for success with the rest of the country.
The announcement came on a significant day for the capital's infrastructure, as KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani inaugurated a major new water project designed to bolster the city's essential services.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X on Sunday, Aziz Ahmad, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister, detailed the achievement.
"Erbil is the first city in Iraq that does not have water and electricity problems," Ahmad wrote, confirming that residents of the Kurdistan Region's capital "now enjoy having 24-hour water and electricity."
Highlighting the accomplishment as a potential blueprint for others, Ahmad posed the question, "What lesson can we learn from the city's experience?"
In his message, the Deputy Chief of Staff also extended an offer of cooperation and support to federal authorities and other provinces. "Let's open the door to dialogue, and the Kurdistan Region is ready to assist our brothers and sisters across all of Iraq," he stated.
The confirmation of the utility milestone coincided with a ceremony held earlier the same day, where Prime Minister Masrour Barzani officially inaugurated the first phase of the Emergency Rapid Water Delivery Project for the city of Erbil.
Following the project's inauguration, the Prime Minister delivered a speech addressing a range of key issues. According to the event's proceedings, his remarks covered the new water project, the provision of 24-hour electricity, public sector employee salaries, and the state of relations between Erbil and Baghdad, in addition to several other topics.
